Description

Certified Nursing Assistants provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff.  CNA’s perform duties such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, or move patients, or change linens and they May transfer or transport patients (click here to visit ONET with additional job task descriptions).

Students completing this certificate will acquire skills, knowledge, and abilities to receive a certificate permitting practice as a Nursing Assistant. Students will learn to identify social, psychological, spiritual, and physical needs of the sick, aged, and injured, will develop a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology, will learn to identify signs and symptoms of common diseases, and to identify complications and report and record them. Upon successful completion of this certificate, students will be prepared for employment in the following jobs: hospitals, nursing care homes, home health settings, outpatient settings, mental health facilities and senior/assisted living settings.

Goals and Certificates

Once students successfully complete the course, they are eligible to take the certification exam given by the State of California Department of Health Services Licensing and Certification.

Prerequisites and Required Assessments

Requirements for CNA Course:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency
  • CPR Card: American Heart Association (Only required for COS, the CPR certification is included in other CNA Programs)
  • Healthcare Provider Health Clearance/Physical Examination: By Physician or NP only
  • Background Check
  • Transportation to Health Care Agencies and College of the Sequoias
  • Immunizations:
    • TB - Skin Test clearance: 2-step process is required at start of program (used for initial skin testing of adult health care providers), yearly thereafter. If a PPD reactor, provide copy of Chest X-Ray results to the Health Center at the Visalia Campus. If the X-Ray is over 12 months old, a surveillance form from a physician stating the student is asymptomatic may be accepted.
    • MMR(Measles/Mumps/Rubella) vaccine: 2 doses or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B: 3 doses or positive titer
    • Varicella: (Chicken Pox): 2 doses or positive titer
    • Td/Tdap: (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) Vaccine : All adults who have completed a primary series of a tetanus/diphtheria containing product (DTP, DTaP, DT, Td) should receive Td boosters every 10 years.
  • For Tulare, Visalia, and Hanford Adult School Programs: Students must complete the CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems) reading assessment with a minimum score of 235.
