Description

COS offer three levels of certificates and degrees in the field of Plant Science: a Skill Certificate in Plant Science, a Certificate of Achievement in Agriculture Plant Protection and Pest Management and an Associate of Science in Plant Science.

Students completing the Skill Certificate in Plant Science will acquire knowledge of and skills in the uses and control of soils, irrigation, weed control, plant diseases and pests, fertilizers and cultivation of crops. Students must complete 17 credits of required courses. Click here for more information on required courses. Once you complete this pathway, you will be prepared for employment in the following jobs: irrigation and crop production as well as related industries, such as equipment sales, fertilizer sales and application, plant protection, and crop consulting.

The Certificate of Achievement in Agriculture Plant Protection and Pest Management prepares students for entry-level employment in the field of plant protection. Students completing this certificate will acquire skills in fertilizer and chemical application, weed control, crop production, and integrated pest management. Students must complete 27 credits. Once you complete this pathway, you will be prepared for employment in the following fields: pest control operator, pesticide applicator, or crop advisor or serving as an agronomist or farm manager. In order to seek further pesticide licensing requirements, log on to www.cdpr.ca.gov.

This degree prepares students for entry-level employment and/or potential further study in the field of crop production. Students completing this degree will have a foundation for the fields of plant science through the study of soils, irrigation, weed control, plant diseases and pests, fertilizers, and cultivation of crops and will acquire skills in crop production to maximize yields as well as profits. Goals and Certificates

Once students complete the program, they will earn one of three levels of certification or degree, depending on the courses successfully completed: a Skill Certificate in Plant Science, a Certificate of Achievement in Agriculture Plant Protection and Pest Management and an Associate of Science in Plant Science.

Prerequisites and Required Assessments

There are no prerequisites for enrolling in the Plant Science programs. Even though a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate is not required, it is preferred. Some employers prefer to hire employees with a High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate. There are also more options for financial aid at COS for students who have a High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate.

Students must take a placement test to enroll in math and English classes for the general education requirements. Students should meet with a counselor to determine the correct placement in these classes.
