Description
Registered nurses assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. They also administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients and may advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management (click here to visit ONET with additional job task descriptions).
The COS Registered Nursing Program is a four semester program that leads to an Associate of Science Degree in Registered Nursing. This Registered Nursing Program prepares students for entry-level employment and/or potential further study in the field of Registered Nursing. Students completing this degree will have a foundation for the field of Registered Nursing through the study of the biological, behavioral, and physical sciences and will acquire critical thinking, effective communication, physical assessment, and cultural competence skills and abilities.

Goals and Certificates
Upon successful completion of the RN Program, students earn an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Once students complete the program, the California Board of Registered Nursing requires students to complete application paperwork which includes mandatory disclosure of your Social Security number and fingerprint screening in order to take the state licensure exam (NCLEX). If you have ever been convicted of offenses, other than traffic violations, it is recommended that you contact the RN Division Office or the BRN for further information: (916) 322-3350 or www.rn.ca.gov

Mandatory Pre-Requisite Courses:
- BIOLOGY 30 Human Anatomy(4 semester units with a lab)
- BIOLOGY 31 Human Physiology(4 semester units with a lab)
- BIOLOGY 40 Microbiology(4 semester units with a lab)
- ENGLISH 1 - Minimum of three (3) or four (4) semester units
Required Assessment:
- TEAS Exam
Additional Graduation Requirements (recommended to be completed prior to entry into RN Program):
- Psychology 1
- One of the Following: Communication 1, 4, or 8
- One of the Following: Nursing 106, Soc 1, or Anthro 10
- One of the Following: Humanities (Area C)
- One of the Following: History 17, 18, or Pols 5
- One of the Following: Library 101, 102 or 103
- Math Competency - Math 230 or equivalent
- Physical Education
Prior to first class session, students accepted into the Nursing Program must complete the following:
- View PPT Orientation
- Obtain an American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR card
- Possess a valid California Driver’s License and California Auto Insurance
- Health Clearance (Immunizations & Physical Exam)

Already an LVN and Interested in Becoming an RN?
LVN to Registered Nursing Program:
The LVN to RN program allows individuals with an LVN certificate and State License to apply credits earned toward an RN certificate and become eligible for the state licensure exam (NCLEX). To enter the program, LVNs must submit an application and all applicants must meet the 2.5 GPA requirements overall AND in prerequisite classes prior to being given permission to apply. An applicant who does not meet this requirement is not eligible to apply to the nursing program under any option of study.

Completion of an LVN Transition course with a “C” or better is required. If no LVN Transition course has been taken, the student must complete the COS LVN Transition Study Module that includes completion of Head-to-Toe Assessment and Skills Check List. This is mandatory. The student will meet with the Director to obtain instructions for completing the study module.
Upon completion of the above courses, the student will then enter the nursing program on a space available basis and complete 20 units of core nursing courses which include NURS 151 Intro Promote & Restore Wellness, NURS 154 Promoting Mental Wellness (4 units), NURS 163 Promoting and Restoring Wellness 1(6 units), NURS 164 Promoting and Restoring Wellness 2 (8 units), and NURS 166 Leadership and Management (3 units).
